Detroit 2, NYY 0

August 3, 2017 – 8:03 am

The good news for this game is that the pitching continues to be good — and in the long term, that is what is going to determine how far the Yankees go this year. Tanaka only gave up two runs in six innings, a true quality start, and Kahnle and Betances pitched three scoreless innings. Betances looked particularly good, even pitching an “immaculate inning” in the eighth. If he is truly back on-track, that’s very good news.

Unfortunately though, the offense was MIA, going 0-for-9 with RISP. But no reason to think that’s anything but a bump in the road. Over the last 10 games, they’ve averaged 4.9 RPG, so hard to complain about that (league average is 4.7). Right now the two big concerns with the offense have to be Judge and Holliday who are hitting .208 and .143 respectively over the last 30 games. With Judge, the question is how much of this is just regression to the mean after his unbelievable first half of the season. What mean is he regressing to? The answer to that is completely up in the air right now, and where his “mean” ends up will be a large determinant of the Yankees success this year.

Holliday, though, is a different matter. Judge continues to have a very good OBP (.357 over the last 30 games), but Holliday isn’t even drawing walks (.173 OBP over last 30). And with Holliday, it’s not really a matter of regressing to the mean — he’s 37 years old, and so some kind of decline is expected. Last year he went form .279 to .246, so to see him finish the season at .215 or so would not be all that surprising. It’s going to be interesting to see how long Girardi keeps giving him ABs.
