NYY 9, Boston 1

September 25, 2011 – 10:21 am

Wow, is Boston ever in a free fall. Saturday the Yankees had nothing to play for, having clinched the division already and home field advantage pretty much a certainty, while the Red Sox were desperately fighting to maintain their wild card lead. Boston had their ace, Jon Lester on the mound, while a struggling Freddy Garcia (Sept. ERA of 10.95) was starting for New York. You had to figure Boston to win this one easily. And yet there you have it, Yankees 9-1. Lester knocked out in the third inning, while Garcia throws six shutout innings. The wild card is still Boston’s to lose, but at the rate they are going now, they’re probably going to get beat by A.J. Burnett. And it doesn’t get much worse than that these days.
