Team BA Now At The Mendoza Line

September 12, 2011 – 2:28 pm

Over the last 10 games, the team batting average is right at .215 — the infamous Mendoza line.  Here’s what the 10-game moving average for team BA looks like for the season:

I’m not sure I’m smart enough to apply any kind of cause-and-effect analysis here. Obviously the team started out the season slow on offense, with pretty much everyone not hitting up to their career numbers. But then one-by-one, people started hitting, particularly Granderson and Cano, and later Jeter and Martin. But since about the third week in August, things have gone steadily downhill. Interestingly, Alex Rodriguez got hurt on July 8, and didn’t return to the lineup until August 21. And during his absence the team BA steadily improved, but then it was on his return that it started downward. Hmmm…. the A-Rod haters would love that. Also, Aug. 25 was the grand-slam-palooza — and that marks the date at which things definitely went in to a nose dive. Coincidence or not? You decide!
