Smoke And Mirrors Fail

June 8, 2011 – 10:29 am

Boston 6, NYY 4.

  • The Freddy Garcia smoke and mirrors routine took a big hit, lasting just 1.2 innings and giving up four runs on four hits and three walks. It was the worst start of the year for any Yankee, and when you think back on some of the stinkers Phil Hughes and Ivan Nova have put up, that’s saying a lot. It will be interesting to see how Garcia rebounds from this disaster.
  • A team that relies as much on the long ball as the Yankees do can’t afford to be without their top home run hitter for very long. Here’s hoping Mark Teixeira’s injury heals quickly with no significant lingering effects.
  • David Ortiz’ in-your-face bat flip after his home run in the fifth inning was a reminder of just what assholes all the Red Sox players are. That type of showboating is dickish under any circumstances, but after what John Lester had done to Teixeira in the first inning, it was totally uncalled for. That Ortiz made no apology for it after the game makes him just as big an asshole as Papelbon, Pedroia, Varitek, et al. Which is saying a lot.
  • Anyone notice that Jorge Posada is a totally different hitter when he’s not DH’ing but actually playing in the field as well? Yeah, it’s only two games so far, but when he does play the field he’s gone 4-for-6, a .667 BA compared to his .169 as the DH. With Tex out for the next couple of games, it’s going to be interesting to see if there is indeed some type of causal relationship there.
