This Is How You Prep For The Playoffs?

September 24, 2010 – 11:20 am

Tampa Bay 10, NYY 3. Back to playing ugly, uninspired baseball. This is one helluva way to get ready for the playoffs. The Yankees record in September is now below .500 (10-11) and don’t look now but the Twinkies have passed them for best record in MLB. They’re still a half-game in front in the East, but given the schedules, the Rays have to be the odds-on favorite to win the division. Add it all up, and the first round is looking like a short series with Minnesota and Francisco Liriano getting two of the five starts. Not good.

Hopefully everyone is just getting all their bad games out of their systems before the playoffs. Yeah, that’s the strategy. CC Sabathia has now pitched poorly in two of his last four starts. Mariano Rivera has struggled in three of his last five appearances. Mark Teixeira is batting .181 for September with not a single home run. Hard to imagine a whole lot of success in October with those three guys not contributing.

Tonight we get to see if Andy Pettitte is back for real. I keep hearing talk about how A.J. Burnett will the the No. 2 starter in the rotation in the playoffs, and that’s downright scary. If Pettitte pitches well again tonight, please tell us that he will be the No. 2 for the ALDS.
