It Gets Uglier And Uglier

Texas 7, NYY 6. The Yankees have now removed all doubt that the recent 8-game win streak was a fluke, as they are now officially stinking it up in every aspect of the game. First it was the starting pitching that disappeared, then the offense went MIA, and now even the bullpen seems clueless. For the second night in a row the offense had no problem putting men on base, but couldn’t plate them. Four times they left the bases loaded, the biggest bust being Jorge Posada’s pinch hit GIDP in the seventh with runners at every base and just one out. After leaving 18 on base and going 3-for-17 with RISP Friday, in this one they left 14 on base and went 3-for-13 with RISP. Considering the Friday game went 13 innings, the Saturday stats are actually worse! Nick Swisher alone left 7 runners stranded, as did the Pena/Posada combination in the eighth slot in the order.

And now the bullpen, once the biggest strength of this team, has now sunk to the level of everyone else. For the second night in a row, the bullpen not only blew the save but also lost the game. And this time it was Mariano Rivera, of all people, doing the damage. Although you do have to ask why he was even in the game after pitching two innings on Friday. And another good question would be why Chad Gaudin was pitching in the fifth with the game tied. Seems like Joe Girardi is managing as poorly as the Yankees are playing.

So now, save for that rather miraculous walk-off home run by a slumping Nick Swisher against Baltimore, this would be a 6-game losing streak. As it is, the Yankees are 1-5 over their last six games, effectively giving back half that 8-game win streak. And Sunday we’ve got Dustin Moseley going up against Cliff Lee to stop the bleeding. Pray for rain.
