Javier and Grandy Carry The Day

July 27, 2010 – 9:15 am

NYY 3, Cleveland 2. With Javier Vazquez (6-7, 4.68) matching up with Jake Westbrook (6-6, 4.74) one would hardly expect a pitchers’ duel, yet that’s exactly what we got as both pitchers were at their best. After a bad outing against the Angels last week, Vazquez returned to the form he’s been in for the last month, going seven innings and giving up just two runs — which he has now done in three of his last four outings. Much maligned at the beginning of the season, Javier has definitely turned in to the reliable starter the Yankees thought they were getting.

And speaking of “much maligned”, how about Curtis Granderson of late? While the rest of the lineup took the day off Grandy went 2-for-3 and got the game winning two-run homer in the eighth. That’s three home runs in the last two games, and his single in the fifth came within a foot of clearing the wall. Don’t look now, but over the last ten games Granderson is batting .306 with a .958 OPS. And like I said yesterday, it really couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.
