Good A.J. Shows Up

July 24, 2010 – 9:10 am

NYY 7, Kansas City 1. Good A.J. made a surprise appearance, scattering four hits over five innings of shutout ball before the rains came, and the offense once again put more than enough runs on the board, striking early for four in the first and then adding three more after the rain delay to pretty much make the game bullpen-proof. Jorge Posada is starting to heat up again, going 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs, and that’s very bad news for opposing pitchers as he’s now providing good cover for Robbie Cano in the number five spot. In fact, over the last ten games the three through six hitters in the order all have an OPS of .930 or better. That’s going to be a big key to winning in the second half of the season.

Probably the best news, though, was that Chad Gaudin actually made it through three innings after the rain stopped, thus saving the rest of the bullpen for today. With Sergio Mitre making his first start since May, he’s likely to need a lot of innings out of the bullpen. Also, Jonathan Albaladejo pitched a solid ninth, striking out two and getting the other hitter on a ground out. At this point I’m not quite sure what to expect from Albaladejo, but right now the bar is set pretty low out there in the pen.
