File This Under “Can’t Win ‘Em All”

July 24, 2010 – 8:12 pm

Kansas City 7, NYY 4. The Yankee offense had scored 7+ runs in four of their last five games, and with Sergio Mitre on the mound you had to figure they would need at least that many to win today. Alas, that wasn’t to be, particularly with both Nick Swisher and Brett Gardner out of the lineup — so I guess you just chalk this one up to “you can’t win them all” and move on.  Mitre’s debut as the number five pitcher while Andy Pettitte rehabs wasn’t very impressive, as he got hit hard in pretty much every inning.  Supposedly Pettitte’s groin injury is healing faster than expected, so hopefully we won’t see too many more starts from Mitre.

So tomorrow it will be up to Phil Hughes to win the series. When you’re playing a sub-.500 caliber team like KC and you have the good fortune to miss their ace, Zack Greinke, you sure as hell better win the series.
