Cano Cleans Up

May 28, 2010 – 10:24 pm

Grand SlamNYY 8, Cleveland 2. Hopefully Alex Rodriquez was taking good notes, watching Robinson Cano sub for him in the cleanup spot. Robbie put on a great exhibition of what a cleanup hitter is supposed to do, going 3-for-4 with 4 RBIs on his grand slam in the seventh that broke open a close game. Clearly A-Rod will be back in the four spot tomorrow, but you do have to be impressed with Cano’s performance. After a torrid April, he cooled off a bit, but is now right back to hitting at a .400+ clip. April was no fluke.

Also impressive was Phil Hughes, who got back on track after poor starts in his previous two outings. Hughes pretty much breezed through seven innings, only getting in trouble once in the fourth when the Indians scored once and had runners on second and third. But Hughes got Luis Valbuena to strike out and coasted the rest of the way, only giving up a solo home run to Russell Branyan in the seventh. Between Hughes excellent start and Cano’s slam, this one was safe for even the Yankee bullpen to finish up.

The other big plus was seeing Curtis Granderson back in and appearing to be completely recovered from his groin pull. Grandy went 1-for-3 with a solid double, and played some solid defense as well. Having him back in the lineup is going to be a big plus.
