A Very Important Game

April 15, 2010 – 11:53 am

I know, I know, it’s very, very early in the season — but still it’s kinda fun to make things out to be of Great Importance when in fact they aren’t. So with that in mind, tonight’s game seems to be kinda important for the following reasons:

1) The Yankees have started out the season doing exactly what you need to do to win championships — win series. So far they are 2-for-2 in that category, and tonight is the rubber match in the LAA series. Let’s keep the series streak going.

2) It’s the pesky LA Angels who historically have been a major PITA for the Yankees, rally monkey and all. Now we made some huge progress in getting this “monkey” off our backs last year in the ALCS, so it would certainly be nice to continue where we left off last October with a series win against the Halos.

3) This is Phil Hughes first start as the newly ordained No. 5 starter so it’s going to be interesting to see how he performs in his first outing in that role. Particularly in light of how Javier Vazquez has struggled in the No. 4 slot. If Hughes does well, it’s just going to up the pressure on Vazquez. But if he does poorly, then we’ll be right back to where we were at the start of spring training, except with only four contestants remaining for the No. 5 slot.
