WTF Were You Thinking, Girardi?????

October 19, 2009 – 10:29 pm

Los Angeles 5, NYY 4. One of the obvious downsides to playing with fire is that if you keep doing it enough, no matter how careful you are, you are eventually going to get burned. And so it is with Joe Girardi’s inexplicable addiction to over-managing the bullpen. Tonight’s loss is 100% on Girardi. There is not a single valid reason for pulling David Robertson in the 11th and putting in Alfredo Aceves. Over the last month, Robertson has out-pitched Aceves in every aspect of the game. And in the 11th, Robertson was pitching as good as he ever has (which is very, very good). He had good stuff, he had good control, he had gotten the first two batters out easily. You simply can not bring in Aceves at that point. It’s absolutely brain dead.

Girardi has been doing this since the first game of the Twins series. Up until tonight he has gotten away with it, but quite frankly there’s been a lot of luck involved. The Yankees are still up 2-1 in the series, but unless Girardi stops this crap immediately, I’m not sure the Yankees can overcome his ineptness in managing the relievers. Tomorrow Girardi is running another gamble, starting CC Sabathia on short rest. I can see both sides of the argument on whether to go with CC or not, but now because of the loss tonight it’s become a huge gamble. The Angel bats are coming alive, the Yankee bats are still sputtering (Teixeira and Swisher looked particularly bad tonight), and there are no fresh arms in the bullpen if CC does run in to trouble early. It’s now up to CC to save Girardi’s over-managing butt.
