The CC-AJ Two-Step

August 9, 2009 – 11:08 am

NYY 5, Boston 0. The rest of the baseball world finally got a glimpse of just how dominating the 1-2 punch of CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett can be, as CC followed up A.J.’s 1-hit performance with 7.2 innings of 2-hit pitching. Boston, there’s a new sheriff in town — at least for now. The reality is that Boston has several key players out with injuries, and they still lead the season series 8-3. So I wouldn’t get all that excited, even if the Yankees do manage to pull off the sweep today. But the important thing is that the 0-8 monkey is clearly off their back, and we’ve now seen just how brutal the Burnett-Sabathia combination can be. Ultimately what it’s all about is the post-season, and this is what games 1-2 of any post-season series should look like for the Yankees. But not to get ahead of ourselves… as Crash Davis reminds us, “We gotta play it one day at a time.” Still, though, a 5.5 game lead on August 9th to go along with the best record in all the majors is a nice place to be at. Everything seems to be coming together, that’s for sure.
