CC + Tex + Jorge = 7 In Row

July 24, 2009 – 10:28 am

NYY 6, Oakland 3. CC Sabathia struggled a bit all night, giving up at least one hit in every inning except the first and falling quickly behind the lowly Oakland Athletics by a 3-0 score. But once the Yankee bats woke up in the 4th to give CC a 4-3 lead he settled down and ended up with yet another good start, going 7 innings and allowing just those 3 runs. It’s hard to make the call right now as to who the No. 1 starter is, CC or A.J. But there’s no doubt that as a 1-2 combination they are more than getting the job done.

Jorge ConnectsThe big hits for the Yankees came from Mark Teixeira and Jorge Posada — no surprise there. First time through the lineup, rookie Vin Mazarro was making the Yankees look like they were the ones that had flown cross-country and then sat out a 2:43 hour rain delay, as the Yankees went 1-for-9 with 5 Ks. But then in the 4th Tex hit a 2-run homer and Jorge followed that up with an RBI double and then came around to score on Eric Hinske’s single which gave the Yankees the lead for good. And then again in the 5th it was Teixeira and Posada who provided the RBI hits that made the score a more comfortable 6-3. Teixeira is proving to be everything that he was promised to be, but it’s Posada who I think is the real story for the offense this year. If you had to come up with one reason why the Yankees failed to make the playoffs last year it would have to be Posada’s injury. Offensively, they lost over 100 points BA and over 200 points SLG at the catcher position. Having Jorge back in the line up is on of the biggest keys to the team’s resurgence this year.
