A.J. Follows Up CC’s Act With A Gem

June 28, 2009 – 10:54 am

Gardner TriplesNYY 5, New York Mets 0. At last we got to see CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett deliver the 1-2 punch that we anticipated coming in to the season, as A.J. followed up CC’s masterpiece yesterday with an even better one-hit shutout over 7 innings. That’s three excellent starts in a row for A.J. — still a small sample size but certainly a good sign that we might start seeing some consistency out of him. But before we get all that excited over the CC and A.J. duo, it’s only fair to point out that right now the Mets are playing without three of their top hitters who are out with injuries. But still, you have to like what you’ve seen.

Offensively the Yankees were held to single digit hits for the first time in four games, and ended up putting runs on the board the “old fashioned way”, with monster home runs from Nick Swisher and Jorge Posada. And Melky Cabrera went 2-for-4, but more importantly made two great plays in the outfield. Of course his “competition” for the CF position, Brett Gardner, had a great game yesterday. It’s going to be fun to watch Melky and Brett Gardner compete for playing time as they try to “one up” each other. The good news is that there is plenty of playing time to go around right now.
