Back In The Saddle

NYY 9, New York Mets 1. Slowly the Yankees are starting to get their act back together. They’ve now won 3 games in a row, first time they have done that in a month. And in last night’s win both the hitting and the pitching came together. CC Sabathia pitched a gem — 6 perfect innings wrapped around a 1 R 3 H 5th inning. And Brian Tomko pitched two perfect innings of relief to top that off. The Mets managed all of 3 base runners all night.

Gardner TriplesMeanwhile, the Yankee hitters continued their torrid pace led by Brett Gardner of all people. Gardner had a career-best night going 5-for-6 with 2 RBIs, even sneaking a home run over the right field fence in the 8th. In his last 5 starts, he’s a sweet 10-for-22 with a .500 OBP. And that latter number is really the most important, given what he does on the base paths. The timing for Gardner heating up couldn’t be better, as word comes down that Xavier Nady may now be out for the season. He’s going to be getting a lot of playing time, and that’s going to be fun to watch.

Once again pretty much everyone in the lineup was making a contribution — save Mark Teixeira. Hopefully it’s still too soon to get concerned about him going in to another extended slump. Combined the Yankees had 14 hits, and once again the opponent played sloppy ball, walking another 6 while committing 3 errors. So the glass-is-half-empty folks will lament the fact that they scored only 9 runs. In fact, they left an unsightly 14 runners on base and were only 3-for-17 with RISP. So indeed it could have been (should have been?) much worse. But who are we to complain?
