A.J. Out-Dueled

June 21, 2009 – 12:02 pm

Florida 2, NYY 1. As advertised, this was one helluva pitchers duel. Josh Johnson held the Yankees to just 1 run on 3 hits over 7 innings, and A.J. Burnett came close to matching him, giving up just 1 earned run on 5 hits. Pitching duels more often than not come down to defense, and this game was no exception. Johnny Damon misplayed an easy fly ball in the 6th that led to the one unearned run that cost the Yankees the game. That’s the second time in the last couple of weeks something like this has happened to Damon in the outfield — small sample size for sure, but you have to wonder if something isn’t right with Damon. With Damon in left and Nick Swisher in right, that’s a pretty big defensive liability right now.

As we’ve said before, baseball is all about winning series, so now it’s up to CC Sabathia to earn his keep and deliver the series win today. A-Rod is back in the line-up, before what is clearly a friendly home town crowd, so it will be interesting to see if the 2-day rest was what he really needed to get him going. Let’s hope so.
