Who Needs A-Rod?

June 20, 2009 – 11:27 am

Robbie Is BackNYY 5, Florida 1. For what is really only one game in a very long season, this one would seem to be a pretty big win. After three very lethargic outings against one of the worst teams in baseball, they started showing some enthusiasm again. That’s always a good start. They also managed to hit an unknown rookie pitcher for once, with everyone in the lineup getting at least one hit. Heck, even Andy Pettitte got an RBI double. Also, A-Rod finally got some much needed rest, and lo and behold Angel Berroa even filled in nicely with a timely extra base hit. And finally, Pettitte pitched a great game — going 7 innings with only 1 run on 3 hits with 7 Ks and no BBs. Of course that doesn’t surprise me as I’ve been saying all along that Andy is more than pulling his weight in the rotation. Hopefully this outing will silence some of the whiners, at least until his next start.

The other reason why this is a pretty big win is that today the Yankees are up against Josh Johnson, one of the top pitchers in the NL this year. And we’ve got the totally unpredictable A.J. Burnett on the mound. But even if they lose today, the Yankees have Sabathia starting Sunday’s game — which should give them a good shot at winning the series, regardless of what happens today. Anything A.J. can do will just be a bonus.
