Robbie !

NYY 5, Washington 3. Thanks to Robbie Cano and some great defense all around, the Yankees managed to avoid losing to the lowly Washington Nationals. Just as we were saying the other day, with baseball you never know what you are going to see on any given day. Shairon Martis — who has a career ERA of 4.95 and someone you would think the Yankees would tee off on particularly after what they did to Johan Santana on Sunday — holds the Yankees to just 2 runs on 4 hits over 6 innings. But then in comes Ron Villone, who is having a stellar year (0.96 ERA in 22 appearances coming in to the game), and he gets lit up by the Yankees and blows the save and loses the game.

Robbie Is BackOther than those oddities, it was a text book win for the Yanks. CC Sabathia goes 7.2 innings, Brian Bruney comes in and finishes out the 8th, then in comes the Sandman for a 3-up-3-down save in the 9th (yawn, what else is new?). The game MVP was clearly Robbie Cano, who continues to make fools of all the Cano bashers. His 4-for-4 day puts him up to a .309 BA, which just so happens to be the best on the team. Add to that several nifty plays in the field — and oh by the way, his fielding pct. is now at .990, third amongst AL second basemen — and you have what is hopefully proof positive that the old Robbie is back.
