Thank You, Tampa Bay

June 7, 2009 – 7:12 pm

NYY 4, Tampa Bay 3. Once again Tampa Bay did everything they could to give the game away, and fortunately this time the Yankees took them up on the offer. Wow, what an ugly ending that was. J.P. Howell walks in one run, Willy Aybar boots an easy inning-ending double play ball to let in the tying run, then Jorge Posada makes an incredible base-running blunder which should have easily been another inning-ending double play but the Rays can’t turn that either and the Yankees plate the winning run. Pretty incredible. Up to that point Matt Garza and the Rays bullpen had been dominant, so put this one in the “lucky win” column. But you take the win, and now go for yet another series win tomorrow night.

And what did we tell you about Mariano Rivera? Yet another ho-hum one inning save. The guy is golden in these situations, but any other situation and you just never know. Hopefully Joe is taking notes.
