Look, It’s A Legitimate Winning Streak

NYY 9, Baltimore 1. Not to take anything away from CC Sabathia’s stellar performance (7 IP, 3 H, 1 ER), but this game was more about Baltimore just stinking up the place in the 7th inning. You’d hardly know it from the final score that this was a big time pitchers’ duel going into the 7th inning. Through 5 innings, rookie Brad Bergesen had held the Yankees to just 2 runs on 2 hits and had retired 13 straight. But then in the 6th he lost the plate, walking two but getting out of the inning without any runs. And then in the 7th he walked two of the first three batters, and the Orioles went to the bullpen — and the roof promptly caved in. All of a sudden it was BP for the Yankee hitters, combined with horrendous fielding on the part of Baltimore, and so it became a laugher. In the end, it was a “wasted” performance by CC — but that’s OK as CC definitely seems to now be in a groove.

Alex Goes Yard
Also somewhat lost in the romp was the fact that it was Alex Rodriguez’ home run in the first that actually turned out to be the “game winner”. That’s four straight games Alex has gone yard in — and oddly, those are his only four hits over that time frame. Whatever. The Yankees were 13-15 with him out of the lineup, and have now gone 9-2 since he returned. He may be referred to as “A-Fraud” in the locker room, but the undeniable fact is that the Yankees are a different team with him in the lineup.
