Iron Man Andy

NYY 8, Toronto 2. Nice bounce back win after being owned by Roy Halladay. Everybody in the lineup contributed offensively except for Nick Swisher, who is starting to become a significant problem. Swisher is now batting an even .100 for the month of May, and has struck out 16 times in 30 ABs for the month. Something needs to happen there. It was particularly nice to see the three rookies at the bottom of the order — Gardner, Pena, and Cervelli — all pick up key hits.  Maybe they can give Swisher some tips.

Plus the Yankees got a good typical gritty performance from Andy Pettitte. He fought off lead-off doubles in the 3rd and 6th innings, as well as fielding errors behind him in the 1st and 4th innings to end up with a quality start — 2 runs (one earned) over 6 innings. Andy is now 3-1 with a 4.00 ERA, exactly what the Yankees hoped to get out of him. He’s not the ace of the staff, but right now he’s certainly the most dependable starter we’ve got.

Now it’s up to CC Sabathia to earn his salary, and secure the series win. If he can do that, that will put the Yankees at least in a position to start cobbling together a decent winning streak, as they have a 10-game homestand against Minnesota, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. Going 7-3 over that period I wouldn’t think is out of the question, no?
