CC Out Dueled

April 28, 2009 – 11:11 am

Detroit 4, NYY 2. CC Sabathia improved significantly from his previous start, but unfortunately Justin Verlander improved even more — and when Verlander is on his game, he’s very hard to beat. And that’s what this game came down to. If you like good pitching, then this was your type of game. Both pitchers had great control, both throwing over 70% of their pitches for strikes, walking none, and striking out 16 between the two of them. You’ll probably hear a lot of complaining about the Yankee offense, going only 1-for-9 with RISP — but that was more about Verlander than the Yankee hitters. Bottom line for this game is that Verlander out-pitched Sabathia in a good pitcher’s duel. You have to tip your hat and move on.

Now we get to see what this year’s version of Phil Hughes is like. He’s still incredibly young (22) for the big leagues, so it’s still unrealistic to expect great things at this point. That said though, the Yankees are now in a 4-game losing streak — which matches the longest streak of last year — so they do need a win here. At least CC gave the bullpen a rest, so if Hughes does get in trouble early Girardi can go to someone else pretty quickly.
