So Much For The Grand Opening

Cleveland 10, NYY 2. Not a very auspicious start for the new stadium, that’s for sure.  Obviously the bullpen cost them the game, but let’s be realistic — if you’re only going to score two runs your chances of winning are pretty slim regardless of what the bullpen does.  So you can just as well blame this one on the offense.  Particularly when you leave 15 men on base, and go 1-for-11 with RISP.  Seems like we saw that act a lot last year…..

Bottom line is that any time you leave a game in the hands of your middle relievers, it’s going to be a crapshoot.  We went through this just a couple of days ago.  The key to winning these days is either put up a bunch of runs so that the bullpen can’t possibly blow it, or get 7+ solid innings from your starter so that the bullpen doesn’t have an opportunity to blow it.  And today CC Sabathia could only deliver 5.2 innings, which ain’t enough.  He held the Indians to 1 run on 5 hits — but in the process threw way too many pitches (122).  Oh well, he’s got a reputation for being a slow starter — heck, last year it was the end of May before he got his ERA below 5.00, so in that regard he’s doing great!
