Going Out In Style — The Last Homestand

September 22, 2008 – 1:03 pm

Now that’s the way to close down the stadium. Yes, it was the last place Orioles, but the Yankees did what good teams are supposed to do — sweep the weaker teams. And as has been the case for most of this year, it was all due to the pitching. You get three quality starts and the bullpen gives you 11 shutout innings with only three hits allowed, and you can win with AAA, maybe even AA hitting. Which of course is exactly what the Yankees got (22-for-94 .234 BA) in spite of going up against the second worst pitching staff in the AL. Oh well, that’s the way the whole season has gone so why should we have expected anything else?

Bottom line is that they finished the last home stand at Yankee Stadium in true Yankee style — going 8-2 and winning three series in a row, two against playoff-bound teams. Kudos to everyone for closing things out with winning baseball.
