Going Out In Style — Act II

September 19, 2008 – 12:55 pm

Great follow-up to the series win over Tampa Bay. You take 3-of-4 from a team that is fighting to make the playoffs, then you’re playing good ball. As much a disappointment as the season has been, on this final home stand they are at least looking like the Yankees of old. The pitching continued to sparkle, as it has for most of the season. Both Aceves and Hughes had good starts which is certainly promising for next year. And Mike Mussina continues his best season in a long time (or ever for that matter), and still has a shot at a 20-win season. Sure would be nice to see Moose back next year.

Although with pitching like that you don’t have to provide much in the way of offense, the Yankees did come up with timely hits when needed. Abreu was 6-for-17 with 6 RBIs and Damon was 5-for-12 with 4 RBIs. You can’t say enough about how steady and reliable those two guys have been, not only this year but throughout their careers. Day in and day out, Damon does whatever is asked of him, and always makes a positive contribution. Hopefully we’ll see him in a Yankee uniform until he retires. And ditto for Abreu. Every year he’s right at a .300 BA with 100 RBIs. The Yankees need him back next year.
