The Blame Game

August 31, 2008 – 11:25 am

As the reality slowly starts sinking in that this season is over, we’ll be seeing more and more ridiculous headlines like “Cano throws away game, possibly season“.  Poor Robinson Cano certainly seems to inspire the hatred of Yankee fans.  Every time Cano makes an error, everyone jumps on him because of his “casual approach”.  Well, if you’ve watched any Yankee games at all you know that’s just the way he plays defense.  Even on all the great plays he makes at second — and yes, the great plays far out number the bad ones — even on those plays his approach is “casual”.  That’s just his style, whether you like it or not.  Odds are that if you force him to change his style to a less-casual looking one, you’ll end up with an inferior fielder.

And as for throwing the season away, sheez — this season was hardly lost with that one game.  The Yankees have been floundering in third and fourth place since opening day.  And there’s a good reason for that.  They are just a mediocre team this year.  In runs allowed, they rank 7th.  In runs scored, they rank 8th.  Mediocre team pitching, mediocre team hitting.  Ergo, mediocre team record.  Blaming this on a couple of players or a couple of games or even on the coaching is ridiculous.  It’s been a total team failure.
