The Battle For Third

August 20, 2008 – 11:59 am

There’s a whole other perspective to this Toronto series that no one else seems to have noticed.  What this series ultimately may determine is not the Yankee’s playoff chances, but rather who finishes in third place in the East.  While the Yankees are 6.5 games back in the wildcard race, they only have a very tentative one game lead over Toronto right now for third place!  And just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse, look at the bottom of the division — the Yankees are only six games out of last place.  They are actually closer to finishing in the cellar of the East than they are making the playoffs!  Now that puts this season in perspective.

And to add insult to injury, in one of the most under-reported stories of the year last night Toronto passed the Yankees in the coveted race for most double-plays.  The Jays’ two GIDPs gave them a tenuous lead in what is shaping up to be a very tight race dominated by the East:

  1. Toronto 121
  2. NYY 120
  3. Boston 119
  4. Seattle 111
  5. Los Angeles 111
  6. Chicago 111

Certainly Captain Jete (second in the league with 19 GIDPs) will take note of this and help the Yankees claim first place in at least something this year!
