The Bombers Show Up At Last

August 17, 2008 – 5:52 pm

NYY 15, Kansas City 6.  At last, an offensive explosion!  But was that simply an aberration or is it a sign of things to come?  Remember that two weeks ago the Yankees scored in double-digits in a 14-9 win against the Angels, only to score three or fewer runs in the next 12 games.  So we’ll see what happens in what is shaping up to be a very crucial series against Toronto.  They will face the Blue Jays top two pitchers (Burnett and Halladay), so we’ll quickly see if the offense is able to build from today’s performance.

Somewhat overlooked in the offensive show was yet another very good outing from Mike Mussina.  He bounced back nicely after giving up three in the first, shutting out the Royals for the next five innings on just two hits and retiring the last 14 batters in order.  Of course, the seven run lead he had after the second probably helped.  Moose now has 16 wins on the season and he should get another 7 starts over the remainder of the season.  Hopefully he’ll finally get that 20-win season that has long alluded him.  Mussina is one of the good guys, and certainly deserves it.
