The Fat Lady Ain’t Singing, But She’s Warming Up

Minnesota 4, NYY 2.  It’s only appropriate that an ugly win should be followed by an ugly loss.  Bad base running, bad fielding, and no hitting pretty much will guarantee you a loss every time.  For anyone still bothering to keep track, that’s now 39 games they’ve scored two or fewer runs.  That’s one out of every three games.  You can moan and groan all you want about the injuries to the pitching — but it’s the lack of offense that has killed this team.  And there’s really no excuse there at all.

Yes, there are still 41 games left, but it’s time to start doing the math.  If Boston continues at their same winning pace of .575, then to catch them the Yankees will need to go 29-12 over these last 41 games.  That means going 17 games over .500 when right now three fourths of the way through the season they are only 7 games over .500.  Or another way of looking at it is last year when they finished the season as the hottest team in baseball, they went 27-14 over the last 41 games.  So they’ve got to improve on last year’s record by two games.  Anyone realistically think that’s going to happen?
