Runs Per Game

Obviously the offense has been pretty much missing in action all season, and this chart shows just how much the offense has cratered.  Over the last 10 years the offense has consistently been well above the league average — but this year the Yankees are pretty much right at that average.  They’ve gone from 5.98 RPG in 2007 to a current rate of 4.71.  Some of that can be chalked up to injuries, but still….. pretty mind boggling.

What’s also interesting is how the pitching has tracked over the last 10 years.  Up until 2004, the pitching was significantly better than league average, just as hitting was also better.  But then in 2004 the pitching collapsed and has pretty much been close to league average ever since.  And you know what else happened in 2004, right?  No AL pennant.  Nor have they won the pennant since then.  Not a coincidence.  The lesson seems to be fairly clear — you can’t slug your way to a championship, you have to have good pitching as well.
