Win Streak!

July 7, 2008 – 1:38 pm

NYY 5, Boston 4.  Back-to-back high drama wins!  An offensive outburst of four runs plus another in extra innings!  An actual win streak!  Could the Yankees finally be turning things around?  Stay tuned…..

What a roller coaster thrill ride it must be right now for Brett Gardner.  So far an ugly .143 BA, but with two game-winning RBI’s in just six games — and last night’s was a walk-off against none other than Jonathan Papelbon and the hated BoSox.  But he’s great fun to watch.  And the couple of times he’s been on base, he’s shown some incredible speed.  Something the Yankees desperately need.  Hopefully he’ll improve the average and be around for a long time to come.

But let’s not forget to thank Tony Francona, the winner of this game’s “It Ain’t Broke But I’m Going To Fix It Anyway” award.  Wakefield had totally baffled the Yankees for 6+ innings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits with only one walk.  He’s no where close to his pitch limit, and the Yankees have the bottom of the order coming up, who are a collective 0-for-8 with 4 strikeouts.  Next batter up is Posada, who looked totally lost in his first two ABs against Wakefield.  So Francona decides to go to the bullpen!  Makes no sense whatsoever.  And sure enough Posada singles, Melky triples….. and the rest is history.  Thank you, Tony.  Pulling Wakefield woke up the Yankees who were right on target to finish the game with two runs once again.
