Texas 3, NYY 2.  As Yogi would say, it was deja vu all over again.  Another very good pitching performance wasted, with the Yankee offense now enjoying their fourth straight vacation day.  Obviously the Yankee hitters didn’t get the memo about the Ranger pitching staff being the second worst in the big leagues.  So ya think Sir Sidney can throw a shutout tomorrow?  Looks like that’s what it’s going to take to beat this team of Cy Youngs.

Meanwhile I see where Peter Abraham is dissing Melky Cabrera.  Sure he’s having a bad year at the plate, but he more than makes up for it with his defense.  Yes, he “only” has three assists all season — but assists are very misleading, and Peter certainly knows that.  Once you establish the fact that you do have a good arm, people stop running on you.  And that’s a good thing.  And that’s exactly what happened with Melky.  Last year he led the majors in assists from center field.  So no one’s testing him any more, and that’s why his assists are down.  A better indicator of his defense is his zone rating, which is currently .930, 4th in the AL.  Ultimately the game is all about pitching and defense (heck, just look at the last two games!) — and up-the-middle defense is critical, and that’s where Melky shines.  So leave the MelkMan alone, ok, Pete?

Oh and by the way, it was Melky throwing out Chris Davis at third in tonight’s game that quite possibly prevented Texas from blowing the game open early.  Of course, in the end it didn’t matter, but still…..
